A Little About The Chakra System:

The Chakras were first mentioned in ancient Hindu texts of knowledge more than 2,000 years ago. There are seven major chakras in the human body and each is of equal importance.

(Please see diagram above for visual location)

  • These chakras are energy centers -  they are considered the focal points for the reception and transmission of energies and act as the energy connection to our spiritual essence. They regulate the essential flow of vital energy throughout our entire system and are responsible for every aspect of our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual life.
  • Each of the seven major chakras (energy centers) has its own function corresponding to different organs or glands in our bodies, and specific behavioral characteristics. Each represents a stage of our spiritual growth. They are patterns of energy, and are shaped like whirlpools (spiraling currents) of energy.

It is good to spend some time to get a good visual impression of this. It will help with your visualization practice.

  • They are positioned along the spinal cord from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head. (Refer to diagram) . Because the chakra system is the central processing center for every aspect of our being, blockage or other energetic dysfunction in the chakras, usually creates disorders in the body, mind or Spirit.

"A result of energetic imbalance between chakras is an almost continuous feeling of dissatisfaction. When the heart chakra is agitated, people lose touch with feelings and sensations, and that breeds the sense of dissatisfaction. That leads to looking outside for fulfillment." - Contemporary Buddhist teacher - Tarthang Tulku.

When I first learnt about the chakras and began practicing various visual exercises to balance the flow of energy in my body, in time there was a significant difference in the way I felt and in my ability to be more centered and calm in the midst of difficult situations.
